Don't Overlook Tedford's Firing
By Chris Jackson Tuesday November 20, 2012
BERKELEY-Coach Tedford’s job is gone, and there’s just some
problems to firing him.
Tedford transformed the Cal program for the better. The year
before he arrived, Cal’s football program had just one win. Then once he
arrived, the Bears made it to nine straight bowl games.
And athletic director Sandy Barbour gives him credit, while she
also admitted this was a hard decision to make, and it was one of her hardest
decisions she has ever made on the job.
"This was an extraordinarily difficult decision, one that
required a thorough and thoughtful analysis of a complex set of factors,"
Barbour said. "Ultimately, I believed that we needed a change in direction to
get our program back on the right track. Cal football is integral to our
department and our university, and its influence can be felt well beyond the
walls of Memorial Stadium. The program clearly serves as an important part of
the connective tissue that binds our community together, and it is imperative
that Cal football be recognized as a leader in competitive success, academic
achievement and community engagement.
"For many years, under Jeff
Tedford's leadership, our program represented all that and more," Barbour
added. "Coach Tedford deserves credit for the extraordinary effort he undertook
to turn this program around and bring us to the heights of a Pac-10
co-championship in 2006. He has served his University admirably, and I will
forever be indebted for his commitment and expertise, as well as the positive
impact he has made in so many young men's lives over the
years."
She’s right about them needing a change, but sometimes firing a
coach that did so many good things for the program can just spiral the program
downhill. While they needed the change, who will they try and hire? Because if
they hire someone new, how do they know if his style of play will work? How do
you know if Cal gets that coaches types of player historically?
Look at Michigan under Rich Rodriguez. That didn’t work since
his style of offense doesn’t fit the types of players Michigan has historically
recruited. Michigan is known for pro type players with lots of physicality.
That’s why Brady Hoke’s style of play works there, even though he still doesn’t
have his types of quarterbacks.
But the reason why Rodriguez’ style of play works at Arizona is
because that’s the style of players Arizona usually gets. They get fast players
from the state of Arizona and southern
California.
Historically, Tedford has down a great job at Cal with a 82-57
overall record there. He helped transform the program into a Pac-12 powerhouse
for a number of years and helped get all new facilities in
Berkeley.
He got Cal to renovate Memorial Stadium and to make it one of
the nicest football stadiums on the west
coast.
As former Cal player Gary Hein says, Tedford is a “victim of his
own success.”
"I think I speak on behalf of a lot of former
players and alums: We're indebted to Jeff for the way he's raised the
expectations of the football program," said Gary Hein, an East Bay attorney who played defensive back at Cal in the 1980s.
"To a large degree, he's a victim of his own success."
When you look at Oregon State’s Mike Riley, who led the Beavers
to just a 39 record in 2011, he has gotten them to a Pac-12 power. Not saying
that Tedford will do that, but it’s possible with the freshman they have right
now.
They may have had a rough last couple of years, since they
haven’t made it to a bowl game twice in the last three years, but sometimes
programs might have a rough two or three years. And when you look deep down into
what Tedford did to the Cal Program, he did so many good things, and when you
get Aaron Rodgers to say not to get rid of him, there’s something the school
should listen to, but don’t forget, that was a few years ago when Rodgers played
in Berkeley.
So should Cal have gotten rid of
Tedford?
Probably, but historically he was a good coach. Cal might be
doing the right thing firing Tedford, but as I say, don’t overlook his firing,
because it may come back to haunt the program.
· Rumors are that Cal may be interested in Boise head coach Chris Peterson. His style of
play could work with the type of players Cal has, but would he want to leave
Boise?
· When Tedford coached at Cal, they had one of the lowest graduation rates in the
Pac-12 so that may have had something to do with his firing also, but a very,
very small part.
· USC may be interested in hiring Tedford at one of the assistant
positions.

Week 8 Articles
Alabama is Cleary the Best Team
By Chris Jackson Saturday October 20, 2012
KNOXVILLE-C’mon, just admit it. Alabama is the best team in the
land.
They are better than Florida, Oregon, Notre Dame, and everyone
else.
Their defense is amazing. They have the best defense all around.
They have great d-lineman, great linebackers, and a great secondary. That
equates to a great defense. It shows that Nick Saban knows how to get a great
defense.
They are the best in the country for points against per game
(7.5). Isn’t that unbelievable?
How can anyone compete with
them?
· Oregon can’t-even though their offense is lightning quick. They have a great offense
and solid defense, but Alabama’s size can run all over the Ducks offensive-line.
Alabama would win 31-17.
· Florida can keep it close, but Alabama will still win. Florida has good defense and
pretty good offense, but Alabama is too physical for them. Alabama would beat
them 24-10.
· Notre Dame would make it sloppy. Notre Dame’s offense would get demolished, but the
Irish have an SEC type defense. But in the end, Alabama would win
17-7.
Alabama’s offense is also solid. Junior quarterback A.J.
McCarron has had an efficient season and proving he is pro-worthy after his
junior season. He has a 69 percent completion-percentage and has a QB rating of
183.6. He has thrown 16 touchdowns and no interceptions. He has stout mechanics
that the pro scouts look for. It doesn’t seem like he gets rattled out
there.
And then you’ve got the running game, which is 20th
in the country in rushing yards per game (219.4). They have Eddie Lacy, who’s a
physical and bruising back, and freshman T.J. Yeldon, who’s also a good running
back.
Their running game is incredibly efficient and also picks up
solid carries of 5 or 6 yards. Lacy averages 5.8 yards per carry and Yeldon
averages 6.8 yards per carry.
Then there’s their receivers. Boy, are they good or what?
They’re not like West Virginia or USC’s receivers, but they are stout. They’ve
got Amari Cooper, Kenny Bell, and Kevin Norwood.
Cooper has 425 yards receiving while Bell has 252 yards and
Norwood has 247 yards.
Alabama isn’t just great defensively, they are physical,
bruisers, and a team that will give their opponents fits throughout the whole
game because of how many different defensive packages they will throw at you. If
you can score 20 or more points on them, that’s basically a
win.
Even if you score 17 points on their scary defense, that’s
almost like a win anyway because of the multiple packages they show. And if you
can force McCarron to unbalanced throws and stop their running game, that’s
another win.
But it’s not like anybody can stop them.

Wyoming Looking to Stop Fresno State's Running Game
By Chris Jackson Friday October 19, 2012
FRESNO-Can Wyoming stop the Bulldogs running
game?
Stopping Fresno State’s running game will be tough. Wyoming will
need to plug the Bulldogs running lanes and hope Bulldog running back Robbie
Rouse can get a limited amount of yards on each
carry.
Rouse leads Fresno with 826 rushing yards on 157 carries and has
8 touchdowns. He leads the Mountain West in rushing yards and is also
13th in the country in rushing
yards.
“They’re moving the ball very very well,” said DeRuyter. They’ve
got some great young players. They’ve taken great running teams out of the game.
They’re a great football team.”
Even though Wyoming wants to stop the running game for Fresno
State, Fresno still has a good passing game led by Derek Carr-the brother of
Giants backup quarterback David Carr.
Carr has thrown for 2082 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. He
leads the Mountain West in passing and is 6th in the country in
passing. He has a QB rating of 151.9, which will make it tough for Wyoming to
try and make Fresno State one-dimensional.
Carr can go to two primary receivers in Davante Adams (530
yards, 6 touchdowns) and Isaiah Burse (462 yards, 4 touchdowns). He can also go
to Josh Harper (333 yards). So that adds dynamic playmaking to the passing
game.
Good luck Wyoming on trying to try and make Fresno State
one-dimensional because they can run and pass effectively. If Wyoming can’t
stop the Bulldogs’ offense, they will be in for a long, gruesome
night.

Fresno State Looking to Create Turnovers
By Chris Jackson Thursday October 18, 2012
FRESNO-Safety Derron Smith wants to create turnovers against
Wyoming.
Hasn’t he already created enough turnovers though. Him and
Phillip Thomas have a combined 10 interceptions-Derron Smith has 4 interceptions
and Thomas has 6 interceptions.
“We didn’t know an exact number,” said Smith. “We both have the
capability to create a lot of turnovers. Especially in this defense that allows
us to create a lot of turnovers.”
10 combined interceptions. That leads college football between
two defensive players on a team. So Wyoming might be in some trouble with their
passing game, especially if they have to use backup quarterback Jason Thompson.
But Wyoming is lucky, starting sophomore quarterback Brett Smith will
play.
Along with the combined ten turnovers with Smith and Thomas, the
whole squad, including Smith and Thomas, has 13 interceptions-which leads the
Mountain West Conference.
Interceptions aren’t the only thing going good for Fresno
State’s defense, there is fumbles. They have forced eight fumbles and recovered
six of them. Junior defensive guard Andy Jennings leads the team with four
forced fumbles. Their other nose guard-sophomore Tyeler Davison-has also
recovered a fumble.
If this defense wants to force Wyoming (1-5, 0-2 MWC) to handing
the ball over, they have the pieces. Especially in the front seven with senior
Tristan Okpalaugo and junior Patrick Su’a. And last but not least, don’t forget
about Derron Smith and Phillip Thomas in the
secondary.

Mountaineers and Bears Have High Potent Offenses
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 30, 2012
MORGANTOWN-Welcome to the Big 12 Mountaineers as they beat No.
25 Baylor 70-63.
"It did feel like one of those classic Texas shootouts," said
Smith, whose school moved over from the Big East this season. "That's kind of
what the Big 12 is about."
And yeah, it was one of those classic Texas
shootouts.
"We expect to score that many points a game (63)," Florence
said. "But the goal is to score more than our opponent and we came up a little
short today."
It was just another day this year for Geno and this high powered
offense.
Geno Smith threw for 656 yards and eight touchdowns against the
Bears secondary. He also hcompleted 45 of 51 passes. So he threw more touchdowns
then incompletions for the second time this year (Marshall-Sept.
1).
"Can you please tell me how you can improve on that?" West
Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.
Baylor quarterback Nick Florence threw for 581 yards and five
touchdowns while breaking Robert Griffin’s previous record for passing yards in
a game.
Both Bears and Mountaineers receivers were all over the place.
For West Virginia:
· Stedman Bailey had 303 yards receiving and five
touchdowns.
· Tavon Austin had 215 receiving yards and two
touchdowns.
· J.D. Woods had 114 yards and one touchdown.
For Baylor:
· Terrance Williams had 314 yards receiving and two
touchdowns
· Tevin Reese had 120 yards receiving and a touchdown.
But both secondary’s have a lot of explaining to do. They gave
up a combined 1507 yards. So there’s lots to work on in the secondary. There
were missed assignments, and bad calls for a zone defense instead of a man
defense.
Now West Virginia has to get used to this. But maybe not this
high scoring of a game (70-63). This score was close to the basketball score
last year between both men’s squads-Baylor won that 83-81. The Big 12 is a
conference for shootouts, not a defensive conference like the SEC-even though
Georgia beat Tennessee in a shootout 51-44.
Now No. 9 West Virginia goes to Austin next week where they will
face the No. 12 ranked Longhorns.

SEC Has Depth Behind Alabama....But Not National Championship Depth
By Chris Jackson Wednesday September 26, 2012
The SEC might produce just one team in the National Championship
this year-and that’s Alabama-but it is possible Alabama doesn’t get in either.
But the depth in the SEC is good.
There are four SEC schools in the top 10 (#1 Alabama, #3 LSU, #5
Georgia, #6 South Carolina). So who said anything about the SEC not being
loaded.
But Arkansas, look at them. They are looking like they won’t
even make it to a bowl game-and they were thought of by many as an SEC team that
could win the conference-or even a National Championship. Razorback fans can
blame former head coach Bobby Petrino (who got fired) for basically hurting the
school so much in football.
And in the Top 25, there are six SEC teams (two outside of the
top 10-#11 Florida and #21 Mississippi State).
But if you’re looking for the answer if the SEC has depth behind
Alabama, the answer is yes-but National Championship-we’ll see, it’s the SEC.
And here’s why:
· #1 labama-they have the best defense in the country, but their passing
game-well….. it’s subpar. They are 70th in the country in passing
yards per game (221). The receiving core for the Tide is pretty good-led by
Kevin Norwood (159 yards) Amari Cooper (138 yards), Christion Jones (125 yards)
and Kenny Bell (123 yards), but their quarterback-junior A.J. McCarron isn’t
much more than an average quarterback in FBS.. Their defense is 2nd
in the country in points against per game (5). And the running game has depth to
provide a spark for a National title-T.J. Yeldon (254 yards) and Eddie Lacy (232
yards). But with their remaining schedule which features trips to #21
Mississippi State (October 27) and #3 LSU (November 3) there is opportunities
for their dreams for the season to be destroyed, they might be the only likely
candidate for a national title in the SEC.
· #3 LSU-They are coming off a week where they narrowly escaped a victory at Auburn
(12-10). And Auburn is just pretty good since the Cam Newton Era ended. One
thing they need to fix is their passing game-which is weak. They are
101st in the country in passing yards per game (194.5). Quarterback
Zach Mettenberger (who has just 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions) is nothing
more than a quarterback that could make it in the WAC or MWC. But the positive
sign on offense is their running game. They have so much depth at the running
back position, as they’ve had in recent years. They have Kenny Hilliard (who has
343 yards on 47 carries) and Alfred Blue (270 yards on 40 carries). And their
defense…well its good, but their secondary is a little weak after Tyrann Mathieu
got kicked off the team in the Summer. They are 8th in the vountry in
points against per game (10.3). But there schedule gets harder from here as they
head to The Swamp on October 6th to take on #11 Florida and they host
#6 South Carolina on October 13th (that is predicated on defense and Marcus
Lattimore). They also host #1 Alabama on November 3rd-Alabama beat
LSU to win the National Championship last
season.
#5 Georgia and #6 South Carolina will likely not be in the
championship-barring multiple losses for Alabama, Oregon, LSU, and Florida
State. And Florida State dominated the second half against Clemson on Saturday.
But Alabama looks like the only SEC team that will win a National title-if they
even do. LSU is good, but one or two surprising losses will come for
them.

Tedford's Days in Berkeley May Be Over in December
By Chris Jackson Sunday September 23, 2012
LOS ANGELES-Another loss to USC figures to bring Bears head
coach Jeff Tedford one step closer to being
fired.
After a good week against Ohio State-even though they lost
(35-28) they struggled in all facets against No. 13 USC in Los Angeles in a 27-9
loss.
Cal if off to their worst start since 2003 (1-3) and if they
lose just 4 more games, they will not be in a bowl game for the 2nd
time in 3-years. But even when they startd out 1-3 in 2003, they managed to
still make it to a bowl game. And it doesn’t get any easier for them later in
the year when they host No. 2 Oregon and No. 9 Stanford in the Big
Game.
“I understand we’re 1-3, but there’s a lot of football left to
be played,” Tedford said. “I have a lot of confidence in the chemistry of our
team.
The defense for Cal isn’t hot this year after giving up 31
points in week 1 against Nevada-lost 31-24, 31 in week 2 against FCS school
Southern Utah-won 50-31, 35 in week 3 at Ohio State-lost 35-28 and 27 at USC on
Saturday-lost 27-9. They are 93rd in the country in points against
average per game (31).
Quarterback Zach Maynard completed just 18 of 33 passes for 173
yards and 2 interceptions. He was also sacked seven times-don’t forget though,
they were missing their first and second string tight ends. So there was less
players for Maynard to go to.
Running back Brandon Bigelow had just 4 carries for 31 yards
after getting 160 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns last week at Ohio State. All of
his four carries on Saturday came in the second half and we in just one play in
the first half-where he didn’t get the ball. But when he works for you the week
before, why do you stop going to what is
working?
Tedford said the reason why Bigelow didn’t get a touch in the
first half was “Early in the game there wasn’t really any room to run. I don’t
put that on the backs.”
“That’s an explosive offense,”USC head coach Lane Kiffin said.
“And at the end of the day we won it up
front.”
Cal had averaged just 2.1 yards a carry on just 77 rushing yards
Saturday as they were beat up front by the USC defense. And it was the opposite
for Cal when they were on defense-USC had a great offensive-line, even without
Matt Kalil who opted to the NFL while Cal had the struggling
defensive-line.
“I thought up front they were better than us today,” Tedford
conceded.
Cal’s D-line let Trojans running back Silas Redd (the transfer
from Pen State) rush for 158 yards
and one touchdown on 21 carries.
They got within USC’s 20 five times but had to take the field
goal 3 times of 24, 26 and 35 yard for kicker Vincenzo D’Amato who some might
say cost them the game at Ohio State with all of those missed field goals wide
left.
Here’s Cal’s remaining schedule, Sept. 29 vs. Arizona State,
Oct. 6 vs. UCLA, Oct. 13 at Washington State, Oct. 20 vs. No. 9 Stanford, Oct.
27 at Utah, Nov. 2 vs. Washington, Nov. 10 vs. No. 2 Oregon, and at No. 18
Oregon State on Nov. 17.
None of those opponents are easy for Cal. And in Tedford’s case
he just wants to win enough of the remaining games to keep his
job.

Oregon State Knows How To Beat Ranked Opponents
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 22, 2012
PASADENA-Sean Mannion and the Beavers steal the spotlight not
once, but twice this season after a victory at No. 19 UCLA
Saturday.
Sean Mannion threw for 379 yards and 2 touchdowns as he
shellacked the Bruins defense.
“It feels unbelievable to beat a great team like that," said
Mannion, a third-year sophomore. "We've got a lot of respect for (UCLA), they
were tough start to finish. It feels great to come out and get a team win like
that."
Talented receiver Markus Wheaton had 150 yards on nine catches
and a touchdown. He has caught a pass in 25 straight games. Receiver Brandin
Cooks had 175 yards on six catches and a
touchdown.
"It was a great job by our team; I just loved it," Riley said.
"That was a really good group of offensive players and a good offensive scheme
and I thought we just kept playing. When something bad happened, nobody blinked
and somebody else made a play."
Oregon State also ran for 122 yards and compiled 501 yards of
total offense.
The Beavers defense held UCLA to 2 third down conversion
(2-15).
"Our defense is awesome. I can't say that enough," Mannion said.
"They gave us so many chances to make plays on offense. It's tough going against
them in practice, so it's not surprising how good they are in the game. They're
a great, great unit and I'm glad they're on our
team."
Freshman quarterback Brett Hundley provided the only real
offense for UCLA as he threw for 372 yards and a
touchdown.
UCLA was held to just 72 yards rushing which is below the norm
for a team like the Bruins that has been predicated by the
run.
"That was a tough loss, obviously, but our hats are off to
Oregon State," first-year UCLA coach Jim Mora said. "That's a good defensive
football team and a well-coached football team and they beat us. They have a
very good run defense. They are big and physical up
front.
Oregon State has now beaten two ranked teams-one was formerly
ranked (#13 Wisconsin-week 2) and #19 UCLA-who will likely skid in the polls. So
is it time the Beavers get the credit they deserve and get into the Top
25.

Bulldogs RB Rouse Dominant
By Chris Jackson Sunday September 16, 2012
FRESNO-Record night is not all that Robbie Rouse and the
Bulldogs got to celebrate, but it was most of
it in 69-14 trouncing of Colorado (0-3).
Rouse is just another ordinary back to many people. But people
say that because he isn’t in a BCS conference. But that doesn’t mean anything
when you break records for a school that has a pretty good history in
football.
Robbie Rouse carried the ball just nine times, but for 144 yards
and two touchdowns. One of the touchdowns was when they were backed up at their
own six and he broke loose for a 94-yard touchdown run. He also had 42 yards
receiving on four catches and two receiving
touchdowns.
“It was better than I even imagined," Rouse said
of the night. "The way we came out and played ... we should expect to play like
this each week."
But his career at Fresno State is one he will
never forget. He has broken rushing records and when it is all said and done, he
might achieve his dream: Playing on Sunday’s. But he needs more size (5-7,
190). But size doesn’t mean that much in the NFL, look at Jahvid Best for
Detroit.
And with remaining games at Tulsa (9/22), vs.
San Diego State (9/29), at Colorado State (10/6), at Boise State (10/13),
Wyoming (10/20), New Mexico (10/27), Hawaii (11/03), at Nevada (11/10) and vs.
Air Force (11/24) can Rouse lead the Bulldogs (2-1) to a Mountain West title
(but they have to get past Boise State first) or to a bowl game for the first
time in two years?
Notre Dame Off To Hot Start
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 15, 2012
EAST LANSING-Notre Dame is showing they have skill at each and
every position (at least that’s the way it
looks).
The Irish (3-0) are off to their best start in three years. They
also beat a top-ten opponent for the first time in seven
years.
"It's a signature win (20-3)," third-year Notre Dame coach Brian
Kelly said.
They didn’t run the ball much, but when they did they were for
solid carries. Cierre Wood rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries (5.6 yards per
carry) and George Atkinson III (Granada-Livermore) rushed for 43 yards on 5
carries (8.6 yards per carry) and he also had a whopping 32-yard
carry.
Quarterback Everett Golson played a good first half completing 5
of 8 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. He finished the game completing 15 0f 32
passes for 178 yards.
Notre Dame spread out the ball with the receivers. TJ Jones had
59 yards on 4 receptions and Robby Toma had 58 yards on 5
catches.
The defense for the Irish held the Spartans to just 3 points.
They held Andrew Maxwell to 187 passing yards and Le’Veon Bell to 77 yards on 19
carries.
Manti Te’o was dominant as he had 12 tackles and broke up two
passes. This came just days after his grandmother died and his girlfriend died
of leukemia.
“It was hard,” said Te’O. “But I had my family around me. At the
end of the day, families are forever.”

Stanford Defense Dominates USC
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 15, 2012
PALO ALTO-There wasn’t any Luck needed for Stanford to still
beat the number two ranked Trojans.
It was just another win for Stanford against USC-the fourth
straight year Stanford has beaten the Trojans and the fifth time these last six
years.
"We don't want to be that team known for one victory," Shaw
said. "We want to be known for victory after victory, stacking wins on top of
wins."
Junior quarterback Josh Nunes threw for 215 yards and two
touchdowns, but completed less than half of his passes (15 of 32). But he threw
the winning 37-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz (Monte Vista-Alamo)
with 10:20 left in the game to give Stanford the 21-14
victory.
Overconfidence may have played a huge factor into the loss for
USC. They were predicted to be in the National Championship, and maybe even be
national champs, but the loss at #21 Stanford costs them a lot. It costs a
national championship (barring Alabama loses a game or two), but it might not
cost them the PAC-12 South. But if they can beat UCLA later this season, then
they can still win the PAC-12 and the Rose Bowl. But don’t forget UCLA is
explosive this year with freshman quarterback Brett Hundley and a physical and
explosive running game led by Jonathan Franklin.
"You learn and go back to playing Trojan football," said a
disappointed Barkley, who has beaten every conference teams but is 0-4 against
Stanford. "We got to just not put the blame on anybody, learn from our mistakes
and make sure we bounce back."
This was the fourth straight loss for USC against Stanford and
the only PAC-12 team Matt Barkley can never say he beat in his college career
with the Trojans. It is the longest winning streak ever for Stanford against USC
in a rivalry that has gotten heated these last few
years.
Barkley and the Trojans watched as when Nunes took the knee on
the final play that the sold out crowd of over 50,000 stormed the field and
amazed the whole country that most people thought USC would trounce Stanford, or
beat Stanford by seven-there was endless opinions for the outcome by everyone.
But not many said Stanford would win.
"I love the energy and I love the enthusiasm," Shaw said. "But
we are not surprised."
The Stanford defense held Barkley to complete less than half of his passes (20 of
41). They held him from throwing any touchdown passes and forced him to throw
two interceptions.

Kansas State is Underrated
By Chris Jackson Saturday Sptember 8, 2012
MANHATTAN, KS-Kansas State quarterback passed for 210 yards and
rushed for 72 as the Wildcats completed a rout of Miami
52-13.
Klein completed 9 of 11 passes for one
touchdown.
Along with his great play, he rushed for three touchdowns and
was bulldozing his way through the Miami
defense.
"It's a step in the right direction," said Klein, who made a
national reputation by powering his way for 27 touchdowns rushing last season.
"Credit our coaches with a great game plan going in, and putting us in some good
opportunities."
John Hubert rushed for 106 yards on 19 carries and one
touchdown.
The Wildcats offense accumulated 498 yards of offense compared
to Miami’s 262 total yards-they had just 40 yards
rushing.
"They were excellent. They beat us in all three phases," Miami
coach Al Golden said. "They outplayed us, outcoached us, starting with me, and
that's it. No excuses. They deserved to win."
Miami quarterback Stephen Morris threw for 215 yards but got
sacked five times.
Give just as much credit to the defense for Kansas State for
giving up just 40 yards rushing and sacking Morris five times. They also forced
three turnovers.
#21 Kansas State (2-0) will be looking at the polls later to see
if they improved in the polls after dominating Miami. Maybe they showed the AP
that they are the real deal.

Upset Saturday
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 8, 2012
LITTLE ROCK, AR-Wisconsin, Arkansas are the top 15 teams downed
by opponents that are just average to many other
schools.
This wasn’t just an ordinary Saturday. This was a rare
Saturday.
#13 Wisconsin lost at Oregon State 10-7 while #9 Arkansas lost
at home against Louisiana-Monroe in overtime 34-31 and #18 Oklahoma State lost at Arizona
#16 Nebraska also went down at UCLA
36-30.
You can check out the Wisconsin against Oregon State article
below.
Arkansas just didn’t seem poised. They looked
overconfident-which you can’t be against a lesser
opponent.
Louisiana-Monroe quarterback went lights out as he accounted for
481 yards of offense and four touchdowns.
Razorback quarterback Tyler Wilson didn’t play the second half
after he suffered a head injury. That really hurt them as they had no real
experience at quarterback after that.
But Arkansas and Wisconsin weren’t the only schools that got
upset. There were multiple schools that lost to FCS opponents- Colorado lost to
Sacramento State on a last second field goal 30-28, Colorado State lost to North
Dakota State 22-7 and Eastern Michigan lost to Northern Illinois 31-14. Cal also
struggled to beat Southern Utah, but they closed it in the fourth quarter to win
50-31, Washington State narrowly escaped Eastern Washington 24-20 and UNLV lost to Northern Arizona 17-14.

Beavers Upset #13 Wisconsin
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 8, 2012
CORVALLIS, OR-Again, again, again, the streak is over for the
Badgers.
That is what Oregon State (1-0) can say after they beat a ranked
team at home for the eighth time in ten years.
They ended Wisconsin’s 33-game non-conference win streak and 193
games without being shutout.
Sean Mannion threw for 276 yards and a touchdown to lead the
Beavers offense in what was mainly a defensive
game.
Mannion’s lone touchdown pass was a 20-yard pass to Brandin
Cooks to open up the second half.
The Beavers defense was stellar as they held Wisconsin to 35
yards rushing, which is way below what the Badgers usually rush
for.
Oregon State outgained them 354-207 and had an advantage of
11:00 in time of possession.
The onside kick towards the end was controversial. It appeared
that Wisconsin recovered the ball before it went ten yards. But it hit the
Oregon State’s special teams players foot, but the officials ruled that it hit
Wisconsin just short of ten yards without it hitting the Beavers
first.
Nonetheless that isn’t a big deal as the Beavers defense was
stellar.
Wisconsin has been struggling at the start of the season as they
barely FCS Northern Iowa last week 26-21 and lost at Oregon State (went 3-9 last
year).

San Jose State Football Becoming A Program
By Chris Jackson Monday September 3, 2012
In one of the rarest cases in San Jose State football, it is
beginning to look like they are becoming a
program.
When was the last time you could say that? Not for a long
time.
The Spartans overcame a 17-3 deficit at halftime on Friday at
Stanford to only lose the number 21 team in the country by 3 (20-17). They also
outscored Stanford in the second half (14-3).
Spartans quarterback David Fales also outperformed inexperienced
junior quarterback Josh Nunes-David Shaw said he looked
“Great.”
Fales completed 24 of 35 passes for 216 yards compared to Nunes’
16 of 26 for 125 yards. San Jose State also outgained Stanford
288-280.
“The Spartans "played one heck of a game," Stanford head coach David
Shaw said. "When we needed it, our defense showed up and got them off the
field."
Stanford destroyed San Jose State last year 57-3 which was a lot
different compared to Friday night’s game (20-17). Team chemistry had to have
played a factor after losing Andrew Luck and the inexperienced secondary that
was giving up big plays to Spartans receiver Noel Grigsby.
Now San Jose State hosts UC Davis in their home opener at 5:00
pm. Now go out and support those Spartans at least once this year. Show the Bay
Area that there is a new team-even though they might not be at the caliber of
Cal or Stanford.
San Jose State has a good chance to win the WAC if all goes
planned and they don’t have any playmakers get hurt. David Fales (OB) and Noel
Grigsby (WR) look to lead the Spartans to their first bowl game since 2006 (New
Mexico Bowl) where they beat New Mexico 20-12.

Freshman QB Sign of Things to Come At UCLA
By Chris Jackson Sunday September 2, 2012
LOS ANGELES-202 passing yards, 68 rushing yards was all freshman
quarterback Brett Hundley needed to show off his impressive skills in the season
opener against Rice earlier this week on
Thursday.
And yeah that’s right, he’s a freshman. You might hear those
“He’s a freshman” chants across the UCLA student section throughout the
year.
Hundley is a 6-2, 223 pound dual-threat quarterback that didn’t
show much, except his speed and arm. He completed 21 of 28 passes and rushed for
68 yards on seven carries which led to a rushing touchdown that came on his
first play. It was a 72 yard run down the right sideline as he easily cruised
in.
He accumulated just 68 rushing yards of the Bruins’ total of 343
rushing yards-mainly led by running back Jonathan Franklin who rushed for 214
yards on 15 carries for three touchdowns.
Hundley made smart decisions except for one interception that
was just a freshman mistake.
With a strong nucleus in the running game, a dual-threat
quarterback, and a good head coach in Jim Mora Jr., there is a sign of good
things to come at UCLA after the 49-24 win against Rice. But will they ever be
able to compete with cross-town rival USC?

Alabama Defense is Stellar
Michigan 14 Alabama 41
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 1, 2012
ARLINGTON, TX-The Crimson Tide’s defense is showing its skills
already to try and prove they are the true number
one.
But is Alabama better than the number one ranked
Trojans?
Alabama’s defense sure knew how to stop Michigan and they have
sure been known to stop good opponents in the past under Saban. So it’s no real
surprise they played great defense against Michigan, especially after showing
that they can hold Michigan to just 14 points.
Even when their defense would play right on the receiver, they
wouldn’t get beat deep.
The Alabama defense recorded three interceptions (Milliner,
Mosley, Lee) and held Denard Robinson completing just eleven of 26 passes for
Michigan. His 200 yards passing were mainly on just two big plays on a 71 yard
pass and a 44 yard pass.
"I didn't make the throws that I should have made today and I
feel that I didn't play as the Michigan quarterback today," Robinson said. "I've
got to step it up and be more accountable."
Milliner’s interception was on a great play where he intercepted
the ball intended for Roundtree to the Michigan 17. That was when Denard
Robinson made the tackle with his head but didn’t seem to be to hurt.
"I got a good jam," Milliner explained. "When I looked up, the
ball was coming and I made a play on it."
Alabama’s defense also held Michigan to just 69 yards rushing
(2.4 yards a carry). Running back Vicent Smith had just 33 yards rushing on 13
carries to fill in for Fitzgerald Touissant who was suspended for the
game.

Marqise Lee Goes off for USC
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 1, 2012
LOS ANGELES-Trojans receiver Marqise Lee goes insane in a mind
blowing performance against Hawaii in Los
Angeles.
Lee had 187 receiving yards accompanied by one lone touchdown.
But touchdowns prove a little, but not much especially after the mind boggling
showcase by Marqise Less.
Mind boggling? Yes.
He didn’t need any help from Robert Woods-both are
All-Americans. Woods had just 42 yards receiving. The Warriors defense
remembered to cover him, but not Lee.
Lee’s longest reception was a 75 yard reception, that wasn’t a
touchdown. His touchdown wasn’t even a receiving touchdown. It was a return
touchdown for 100 yards in the third quarter.
His 187 yards receiving was half of the whole squads receiving
yards (369).
Him and Barkley were on the same page en route to the blowout
49-10 victory which helped Matt Barkley get 247 passing
yards.
If USC can play like this all year, especially if Marqise Lee
can, can they win the title?

RB Alston is a Bruiser
Shawne Alston is Proving He is a Stud at RB for WVU
By Chris Jackson Saturday September 1, 2012
MORGANTOWN, WV-Shawne Alston is proving a lot in a bruising
performance against Marshall.
But don’t forget, it was against average Conference USA opponent Marshall from Huntington.
Alston was doing everything a big running back should do, and
that’s running north and south and using your power to your advantage. He did
all that.
“It’s nice to have a guy like Shawne
Alston. He’s hard to tackle,” Holgorsen
said. “To have a guy like that with a bunch of offensive linemen who can
establish the line of scrimmage, obviously I was pleased with
that.”
Shawne ran for 123 yards on 16 carries (averaging 7.7 yards a
carry) and also scored two tochdowns which was just one-fifth of the ten
touchdowns the Mountaineers scored.
Alston’s first touchdown came from three yards out on a run up
the middle to give West Virginia a 13-0 lead with 4:53 left in the first
quarter. His second score came early into the third quarter on a flattering run
from 21 yards out (41-10).
His 123 yards rushing was not even half the team’s rushing
yards. The Mountaineers rushed for 331 yards and averaged 9.5 yards a carry,
compared to just 132 yards rushing for Marshall and averaging just 2.9 yards a
carry.
Offense Shows off to Marshall
The Mountaineers offense wasn’t just showing off against
in-state rival Marshall Saturday afternoon. They were playing like they did
against Clemson in the Orange Bowl and like they usually
do.
The offense accumulated 655 total yards-324 passing, 331
rushing.
Quarterback Geno Smith was spectacular. But don’t forget it was
against a Marshall squad not really known for its defense. He threw four
touchdowns-two to Stedman Bailey, one to J.D. Woods and one to Tavon Austin. He
also completed 32 of 36 passes for 323 yards.
The receiving core is also something special. Led by Stedman
Bailey and Tavon Austin, they accumulated (every receiver) 324 yards receiving.
Bailey had 104 receiving yards while J.D. Woods had 75 yards
receiving and Tavon Austin had 53 yards
receiving.
Tavon also had 66 yards rushing on three carries.
The Mountaineer offense scored 69 points en route to a blowout 69-34 victory over
Marshall in the final meeting of the Coal Bowl-the Coal Bowl won’t end. It is
just taking a few year break after West Virginia’s recent move to the Big
12.

Stanford Names Josh Nunes as Starting QB
By Chris Jackson Tuesday August 21, 2012
STANFORD-Josh Nunes, who has attempted just two passes in his college career, has been named
the starting quarterback by David Shaw.
Nunes, who is a junior, beat out sophomore Brett Nottingham from Monte Vista (Alamo)
for the starting spot. Shaw said that Nunes won the job because of
consistency.
At least for now he will be the starter. Shaw said he will be the starter against
San Jose State, but Nottingham will also get a lot of playing time late in that
game.
Shaw said Nottingham has the “stronger arm” but that didn’t mean much to Shaw because
he was looking for consistency.
Now Nunes looks to replace Andrew Luck. That is the hardest task in college
football, along with replacing Robert Griffin at
Baylor.

Stanford QB Spot Still Up for Grabs
By Chris Jackson Wednesday August 8, 2012
The Quarterback position battle is till up for grabs at Stanford. But who
can fill the shoes of Andrew Luck?
This QB battle at Stanford is one of the most intriguing one’s out there.
It is like any other battle though. You need to determine who your starter is
within a week of the regular season. If you tryout both quarterbacks during the
year, you can see what will happen.
Look at what happened to Texas last year. They played both
freshman Case McCoy-the younger brother of former Longhorn QB Colt McCoy, and
David Ash. Texas finished the regular season 7-5. And that changing of QB’s was
their main problem. They didn’t have many problems defensively or much
offensively, except for the quarterback.
David Shaw said this battle could go through their first game of
the year against San Jose State on August 31. They can have the battle go
through that game because it will most likely be just a
tuneup.
"This is the best and worst time for a football
coach," said Stanford's David Shaw, the reigning Pac-12 Coach of the Year now
entering his second season at the helm. "The best because we all have the same
dreams and aspirations of what our teams can accomplish, but then the worst
because we can't see them for another few days. It's driving us
insane."
Brett Nottingham, out of Monte Vista in Alamo,
completed 5 of 8 passes last year-all in the game against San Jose State. He is
a sophomore who was a four-star recruit out of high school, according to
espn.com.
Nunes didn’t play at all last season due to a
foot injury. He will be a junior this season.
But Nottingham might be more deserving. He is a
sophomore who has three years to improve. And if you have Nunes start, then
Brett Nottingham might not be able to start until he is a
senior.
Both are above average pro-style quarterbacks.
But it is hard to get as much hype of Andrew Luck, who is arguably the best
pro-style quarterback at Stanford along with Jim Plunkett and John
Elway.
"There was a lot of hype surrounding a single
player last year, which was much deserved," Shaw said. "But at the same time, we
feel like we've got some guys coming back who are some pretty good football
players. We believe we're going to be the team we've always been up front. We
believe we're a physical run team."
If you have a problem naming who your starting QB will be, it is not
good, especially in the Pac-12. With games that include USC-who many say will be
National Champions, Oregon-who has arguably the most speed in college football,
Washington, Cal-who has a good recruiting class, and Notre Dame-who has more
depth this year, naming your starter is key.
And if you have Nunes start, then
Brett Nottingham might not be able to start until he is a
senior.
